and so Barbacoa is exactly why so many people have come to LOVE Bali, although evolving from their nostalgic younger days ( which you can still find around Sanur and Legian). Bali can be a total gastronomic adventure, catering to even the fussiest of foodies. Don’t get me wrong I love the street food, however occasionally its really nice to step it up and see how the other half live at a fraction of the price you would spend in Australia ( and other countries for that matter). Barbacoa opened a couple of months back and is proving itself to being an awesome place for great food, ambient atmosphere and sensational drinks. The babi guling is extremely popular and the squid is amazing, I have added it to the ‘Fine Dining’ section of my App, only as its a little fancier than other options ( you should wear a shirt and some shoes) and up there in price for Bali, however still totally reasonable. Definitely put on your must do list.

Masakan Padang – Lombok Senggigi. After sampling a few of the alleged top 10 places to eat according to Trip Advisor ( which I am now sure is somehow totally rigged) we headed to something more familiar and loved. Masakan Padang is a type or warung which the food originated from West Sumatra, popular all over Bali, Indonesia and Singapore, you will find this type of place everywhere, not fancy but very cheap, even with a little tourist tax on top, you can point and nod according to which dish you think looks tasty to add to your nasi, the more meat the more the price goes up. This little place was pretty good in central Senggigi, Lombok. Very high in calories as it is all mostly deep fried and contains heaps of coconut milk. Many of the dishes also contain offal. Its a tasty place for a quick meal or takeaway. Be ware of the sambal however as it is good and very hot, and I can not guarantee hygiene standards, ( you may get Bali Belly if you have a bit of a sensitive tummy).
Take the kids up to Bali Equestrian Centre and Aravina Estate in Berawa ( located between Seminyak & Canggu ) for horse riding/ grooming, a play, swim and some lunch all whilst you anjoy a glass of Margret River wine perhaps. With pony’s and horses suitable for all ages, the kids can finish up with a swim in the pool & play on a slide, swing, sand pit, cubby house, and totem tennis. A great way to spend the morning or afternoon. For more details, bookings and prices see their website. They also have lessons, camps, pizza making days plus more. http://www.baliequestriancentre.com/
When you get to Gili T and if you are after some excellent food, great tunes and a beachside hang out, then from the main jetty, turn left and walk perhaps 800 meters and just past Villa Ombak you will find the Pearl Beach Lounge. You can choose to sit absolute ocean front, or across the road you will find a the pool with the waterfall and swim up bar. Such a soothing place. If you swim out the drop off ( be careful of the currents you will find the most beautiful reef and we saw 2 sea turtles and loads of beautiful tropical fish. We enjoyed burgers, a chicken sandwich and the best scallops with green chili. An awesome place to spend a few hours. You can stream their music through the website check it out ! http://pearlbeachlounge.com/
While we were exploring Lombok, the Qunci Villa and Resort was the place I wanted to stay but it was booked out. However we went up for Happy hour and dinner. It is a beautiful place to stay, and very popular. Some great deals to be got online shop around. Located approximately 10 minutes drive from the central part of Senggigi and on the coastline, it would be a perfect place to relax for a few days and to set of the explore the Gilis and more of Lombok. Its about a 25 minute drive from where the speed boats are to get to the Gilis. The beach out the front was a little rough and some guys were trying to surf ( its wasn’t good) The Quar restaurant had impeccable service, quality food and the freshest cocktails. A beautiful place to enjoy a sunset. I inquired about a massage as I was really struggling to find a place in central Senggigi however it was approx. 500 000 Rupiah. I noted heaps of couples with smaller babies and children so it is somewhat child friendly I also noted 1 couple with a nanny ( I think they may have brought her with them or booked through the hotel) . I would definitely look this place it if you a planning to head to Lombok. For more details head to their website http://www.quncivillas.com/

We recently stayed at the Kebun Villas & Resort on Lombok. Its a nice place to base yourself to explore the island, to sit back and relax, set in a stunning garden, with the option of hotel style rooms ( I would ask for a ground floor pool side room ) and also villas ( we stayed in the Villa it was great). It is a well priced option for families( good deals through Booking.com) . The breakfast was adequate catering for a very international guest base, very friendly and attentive staff. The room service was very quick, great if you have hungry kids to feed, and the linen and beds very comfy. The bathrooms were lovely (although a fleeting bad smell from the drain system, which was promptly sorted out by maintenace staff and very common in Indonesia). Some of the non slip surfaces are a little dirty , however these are difficult to keep clean. Overall definately worth considering if you are planning a trip to Lombok. It is approxiately just over an hour from the International Airport, you can catch a boat to the Gilis ( approx 1 hour boat trip) off Senggigi Beach which is a 2 minute walk across the road. Or you can drive up the beautiful coast for approx 30 minutes and catch a speed boat to the Gilis ( about 10 minute trip) This was my preferred option as I get really sea sick.
